Twin, Full, Queen, King… and then Twin XL and California King just to keep things confusing. Mattress sizes seem simple until you’re actually trying to choose one — and picking the wrong size is a mistake you live with for years.
Here’s a clear breakdown of every standard mattress size, who each one is best for, and how to choose the right fit for your body, your room, and the people (and pets) you share with.
Standard mattress sizes (US)
Here are the standard US dimensions and who each suits best:
| Size | Dimensions (inches) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38″ × 75″ | Kids, single sleepers, small rooms, bunk beds |
| Twin XL | 38″ × 80″ | Taller solo sleepers, teens, dorm rooms |
| Full (Double) | 54″ × 75″ | Solo adults who want more room; tight for couples |
| Queen | 60″ × 80″ | The most popular size — couples and solo sleepers who like space |
| King | 76″ × 80″ | Couples who want maximum width; families who co-sleep |
| California King | 72″ × 84″ | Taller sleepers who want length over width |
(Dimensions are standard US sizes and can vary slightly by brand.)
A closer look at each
Twin (38″ × 75″). The smallest standard size. Ideal for children, single sleepers, and small spaces. Common in bunk beds and trundles. Most adults find it short and narrow for long-term use.
Twin XL (38″ × 80″). Same width as a Twin but 5 inches longer — better for taller teens and adults. The standard in college dorms. Great for a solo sleeper in a narrow room. (Two Twin XLs side by side also make up a “Split King.”)
Full / Double (54″ × 75″). Roomy for one adult who likes to spread out. Workable for couples on a budget or in a small room, but at 27 inches per person, it’s snug for two.
Queen (60″ × 80″). The most popular size in the country, and for good reason — comfortable for couples without dominating a bedroom, and luxuriously roomy for a solo sleeper. The safe default if you’re unsure.
King (76″ × 80″). As wide as two Twin XLs together — maximum personal space for couples, and the go-to if kids or pets pile in. Needs a larger room (and bigger sheets/bedding). A “Split King” (two Twin XLs) lets couples pick different firmness or use an adjustable base on each side.
California King (72″ × 84″). Four inches narrower but four inches longer than a standard King — designed for taller sleepers (6’+) who care more about length than width. Needs a long room.
How to choose your size
Run through these:
- How many sleepers? Solo → Twin XL, Full, or Queen. Couples → Queen minimum, King ideal.
- How tall are you? 6 feet or more → choose an XL/80″+ length (Twin XL, Queen, King) or California King for extra length.
- Do kids or pets join you? Size up — King or split King gives everyone room.
- How big is your room? Measure first. Leave room to walk around the bed (about 24–30 inches on the sides you use). A King in a small room can feel cramped.
- Couples with different needs? A Split King lets each person choose firmness or adjustable-base position independently.
A good rule of thumb: buy the largest size your room and budget comfortably allow. Almost no one regrets more sleeping space — but plenty of people wish they’d sized up.
Quick gut-check
- Solo or sharing? (Couples → Queen or King.)
- Are you 6’+ tall? (Get 80″+ length, or California King.)
- Will the size fit your room with walking space?
- Do you and a partner want different firmness? (Consider Split King.)
